The 3M Bair Hugger warming blanket, a device used in hospitals to keep patients warm after surgeries, is the subject of numerous lawsuits alleging that it caused plaintiffs to develop deep joint infections, including hip, shoulder and knee replacement infections. Plaintiffs claim the device spreads bacteria into surgical sites, leading to serious complications that often require additional surgeries or even amputations.

Bair Hugger lawsuit FAQs

What is the Bair Hugger warming blanket?

The Bair Hugger warming blanket is a forced-air device designed to maintain body temperature during and after surgery. It works by blowing warm air onto the patient’s skin, which can help reduce bleeding and speed up recovery.

Why is the device under scrutiny?

According to multiple studies, forced-air warming devices like the Bair Hugger may spread bacteria into surgical sites, increasing the risk of hip, shoulder, and knee replacement infections. Lawsuits allege that 3M, the device’s manufacturer, was aware of these risks as early as 2009 but continued marketing the device as safe.

What are the potential complications?

Deep joint infections can lead to severe medical outcomes, including multiple surgeries, prolonged hospital stays or even amputations. Patients have reported facing life-altering consequences, such as losing mobility or requiring long-term medical care, due to complications.

Are there any studies supporting these claims?

Several studies have linked forced-air warming devices to increased infection risks. For instance, a 2011 study in The American Journal of Infection Control found that 58% of forced-air warmers emitted airborne contaminants. Another study in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery suggests that unclean air associated with these devices could increase the risk of infection. The study recommends that patients should be provided with air-free alternatives.

How many people have been impacted?

The total number of affected individuals is unknown. Over 7,000 lawsuits have been filed against 3M.The number of plaintiffs continues to grow.

What should you do if you’ve been affected?

If you or a loved one has suffered deep joint infection complications after using a Bair Hugger warming blanket, you may be eligible to join the Bair Hugger litigation and seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
